Poetry Park (Poezijos parkas) is one of the most popular and picturesque green spaces in the center of Marijampolė, Lithuania, known for its harmony between water reservoirs, art, and nature.

History

The establishment of the park began in 1984 and was completed in 1987 at the confluence of the Šešupė and Javonis rivers. It earned the name "Poetry Park" in 1986 after hosting the national festival "Poetry Spring" (Poezijos pavasaris). In 2012, the park underwent a major reconstruction designed by architects Reda Marcinkevičienė, Algirdas Marcinkevičius, Gintautas Vieversys, and their team, who were awarded a Lithuanian Artists' Association prize for this project.

Architectural and Landscape Features

Water Elements: The centerpiece of the park is the stone-paved bed of the Javonis stream and the open banks of the Šešupė river, featuring decorative pedestrian bridges and fountains.
Layout and Lighting: The territory features smooth pedestrian pathways, modern ambient lighting, benches, and relaxed seating areas.
Sculptures: Prominent artworks by sculptor Julius Narušis are located here, including the sculpture "Šešupė" and a composition dedicated to the famous song "Kai sirpsta vyšnios Suvalkijoj" by bard Vytautas Kernagis.
Flora: The park hosts nearly 100 species of trees and ornamental shrubs.

Current Function

The park serves as a central recreational hub for residents and visitors. It contains a small amphitheater for cultural and literary events, as well as a children's playground. The entire area is fully accessible for persons with reduced mobility.

Interesting Facts

Before its establishment in the 1980s, part of the area belonged to a Marian Monastery orchard alongside older residential and industrial structures.
The modern architectural renovation successfully preserved the original bridge structures while integrating contemporary public art.
