Ventspils

Ventspils is one of the oldest cities in Latvia and a major Baltic Sea port town located in northwestern Kurzeme. Known for its clean, modern infrastructure and well-kept environment, Ventspils is a top destination for families, outdoor enthusiasts, and culture seekers. The Venta River flows through the city, splitting it in two before entering the Baltic Sea.

History

The history of Ventspils dates back to the late 13th century, when the city and the mouth of the Venta River were first documented in connection with the construction of the Livonian Order Castle. In the 14th century, Ventspils joined the Hanseatic League. The city experienced its golden age in the 17th century under the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia, particularly during Duke Jacob's reign, when shipbuilding and maritime trade flourished.

Ventspils features well-preserved historical architecture across the town:

  • Old Town and Market Square: The historical center around the Market Square features 18th and 19th-century wooden and masonry buildings, alongside the old town hall.
